WHY VISIT LAKE ARGYLE?

Why Lake Argyle is a big hit with tourists

Lake Argyle is one of Australia's most remarkable inland waterways and a destination unlike anywhere else in the Kimberley. Created by the damming of the Ord River in 1972, the lake has evolved into a thriving ecosystem that is now home to an extraordinary diversity of wildlife, spectacular scenery and one of the country's most unique freshwater cruising experiences.

Covering more than 1,000 square kilometres at full supply level, Lake Argyle contains enough water to fill Sydney Harbour more than 18 times. Its vast network of sheltered bays, rugged islands and secluded inlets creates an ever-changing landscape that can only be fully appreciated from the water.

Unlike many Kimberley experiences that focus on dramatic tides or rugged coastal landscapes, Lake Argyle offers a peaceful contrast. Calm waters, stunning reflections, ancient sandstone ranges and wide-open skies create an atmosphere of tranquillity that appeals to nature lovers, photographers and anyone looking to slow down and appreciate the beauty of the East Kimberley.

Whether you choose a morning sightseeing cruise, a magical sunset voyage or a full-day adventure combining Lake Argyle with the iconic Ord River, you'll experience one of Australia's richest freshwater environments while learning about the fascinating history of the Ord River Irrigation Scheme and the transformation of this once-seasonal river system.

For many visitors, a Lake Argyle Cruise becomes one of the unexpected highlights of a Kimberley holiday—offering breathtaking scenery, abundant wildlife and unforgettable sunsets in a setting that feels both remote and serene.

AUSTRALIA'S LARGEST FRESHWATER LAKE

A Kimberley treasure

Many visitors are surprised to learn that Lake Argyle is Australia's largest freshwater lake by volume. When full, it contains more than 18 times the amount of water held in Sydney Harbour and stretches across an immense network of bays, inlets and over 70 islands.

Its vast size means every cruise reveals something different. Around each bend you'll encounter towering cliffs, hidden coves, tranquil beaches and panoramic views across the Carr Boyd Ranges that are impossible to appreciate from the shore.

The sheer scale of the lake creates an extraordinary sense of space and tranquillity, making it one of the Kimberley's most peaceful cruising destinations.

AN INCREDIBLE WILDLIFE SANCTUARY

One of the most abundant natural wildnesses in the Kimberley

Lake Argyle has become one of Australia's most important freshwater wildlife habitats.

More than 240 species of birds have been recorded around the lake, making it a paradise for birdwatchers throughout the year. White-bellied Sea Eagles soar overhead, while egrets, herons, darters, cormorants and kingfishers are regularly seen along the shoreline.

The lake is also home to one of the world's largest populations of freshwater crocodiles. Unlike their larger saltwater cousins found elsewhere across the Kimberley, freshwater crocodiles are generally shy and avoid human interaction. Spotting one basking quietly on the shoreline is often a highlight of any cruise.

Below the surface lives an abundance of native fish, including the famous archerfish, which are renowned for their remarkable ability to shoot jets of water to catch insects from overhanging branches. Depending on your cruise, you may also witness the entertaining catfish feeding demonstrations that have become a favourite with families.

Wallaroos, agile wallabies and a variety of reptiles also inhabit the rocky escarpments surrounding the lake, while the peaceful environment provides endless opportunities for wildlife photography.
