PRINCE REGENT RIVER GUIDE

Discover the Prince Regent River, one of the Kimberley's most spectacular wilderness destinations. Learn how to visit, what to see and why it is a highlight of many Kimberley cruises.

EXPLORE ONE OF AUSTRALIA'S MOST EXTRAORDINARY WILDERNESS WATERWAYS

Deep within the remote Kimberley coast lies one of Australia's most spectacular river systems — the Prince Regent River.

Flowing through an untouched wilderness of sandstone escarpments, rainforest pockets, waterfalls and ancient geological formations, the Prince Regent River is widely regarded as one of the highlights of a Kimberley expedition cruise.

Unlike many Australian rivers, the Prince Regent remains largely inaccessible by road. For most visitors, the only practical way to experience this remarkable landscape is by cruise ship, expedition vessel or scenic flight.

The combination of dramatic scenery, abundant wildlife and complete remoteness creates an experience that many travellers describe as the true heart of the Kimberley.

WHERE IS THE PRINCE REGENT RIVER

How to find the Prince Regent River

The Prince Regent River is located within the remote north-west Kimberley region of Western Australia.

The river flows through the vast Prince Regent National Park, an internationally recognised wilderness area renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and pristine natural environments.

Eventually, the river reaches St George Basin, one of the Kimberley's most important coastal waterways.

A Protected Kimberley Wilderness

The Prince Regent River flows through one of Australia's largest protected wilderness areas.

The surrounding national park covers thousands of square kilometres and remains largely untouched by modern development.

Accessible Only by Air or Sea

Unlike many Australian destinations, there are no roads leading directly to the Prince Regent River.

Most visitors arrive via:

  • Kimberley expedition cruises
  • Small ship cruises
  • Scenic flights
  • Helicopter excursions

WHY IS THE PRINCE REGENT RIVER SO FAMOUS?

What makes the Prince River so special

SOME OF THE MOST STUNNING SCENERY IN THE KIMBERLEY

While destinations such as Horizontal Falls and Montgomery Reef often capture headlines, many experienced Kimberley travellers consider the Prince Regent River the most beautiful section of the entire coastline.

Towering Sandstone Escarpments

The river winds between ancient sandstone cliffs that rise dramatically above the water.

These escarpments are among the oldest visible landscapes in Australia.

Exceptional Biodiversity

The river supports a rich variety of wildlife and plant species rarely encountered elsewhere.

Complete Remoteness

One of the defining features of the Prince Regent River is the sense of isolation.

There are few places in Australia where visitors can experience such vast wilderness with so little evidence of human development.

KING CASCADE - THE MOST FAMOUS ATTRACTION

Everyone wants to see the King Cascade

SOME OF THE MOST STUNNING SCENERY IN THE KIMBERLEY

The best-known destination within the Prince Regent River system is King Cascade.

This striking terraced waterfall flows over ancient rock formations and is a highlight of many cruise itineraries.

What Is King Cascade?

Unlike King George Falls, which plunges vertically from towering cliffs, King Cascade spreads across layered rock shelves, creating a broad and visually distinctive waterfall.

A Kimberley Cruise Tradition

For many years, expedition cruise vessels have navigated close to King Cascade, providing guests with exceptional viewing opportunities.

ABORIGINAL HERITAGE & CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

1000s of years of indigenous history

TRADITIONAL CUSTODIANS OF THE PRINCE REGENT RIVER

The Prince Regent River region has been home to Aboriginal peoples for thousands of years.

The surrounding landscape contains culturally significant sites, rock art and places of deep spiritual importance.

he traditional custodians of the Prince Regent River in the Kimberley region are the Worrorra (also spelled Dambimangari) and Wunambal Gaambera (Uunguu) peoples.

The river and the surrounding Prince Regent National Park cross over these distinct native title areas and hold deep cultural significance:

  • Worrorra (Dambimangari): Their traditional sea and land country stretches along the coast from the Robinson River up to the Prince Regent River area.
  • Wunambal Gaambera (Uunguu): They are the traditional owners of the northern portions of the park and lands extending into the Mitchell Plateau.

Cruise passengers are required to pay a Native Title fee to the Traditional Owners of both groups. These are either priced into the cost of the cruise (as is the case with most of the major cruise lines) or added as extra fee payable in full, prior to departure.
