Broome was once the gateway to the Northwest, famed for the Pinctada Maxima Mother of Pearl. It was a drawcard for many seeking fortunes. 

BROOME PEARL FARM HISTORY

Around the late 1880s, the West Kimberley began to buzz. Divers flocked to Roebuck Bay from around the world to find the fortune and many never survived to tell the tale. A visit to the Japanese Cemetary in Broome is testament to this.

By1910, Broome had literally boomed, becoming the largest pearling centre in the world. At any one time there were up to 300 luggers ploughing through the waters surrounding Roebuck Bay. However, there were dark horizons looming with the advent of World War II. Foreign labour was rounded up and impounded in internment camps. Even the fleet of luggers was scuttled and burnt to prevent it falling into Japanese hands should an invasion happen.

Today there is still a thriving pearling industry that you can experience on one of our tours, or a through a visit to one of the boutiques in Broome.
