DIVERSITY II 9 DAY KIMBERLEY ITINERARY

9 Day Diversity II Kimberley Cruise - Broome to Hunter River (or reverse)

DAY 1 - DEPART BROOME

Sadly your adventure with us is coming to an end. After an overnight steam south, past Cape Leveque, enjoy your last brekkie on onboard Odyssey, watching the endless stretch of Cable Beach pass by. It’s time to swap e-mails and farewell your new found friends onboard Odyssey as we arrive into the Port of Broome mid morning where your transport will be waiting to take you back to your accommodation.

DAY 2 - BUCCANNER ARCHIPELAOGO & HORIZONTAL FALLS

First stop will be Talbot Bay and the one of the Kimberley’s most impressive natural features: the Horizontal Waterfalls. This is nature at it most awesome. Immense rock forms, the surge of water, the spectacular scenery of Cyclone Creek. Next we are cruising through the Buccaneer Archipelago its inspiring with its group of some 800 islands and 10m tidal range. It got its name from Philip Parker King in 1820 when he named this part of the Northwest in memory of William Dampier, a reputed Buccaneer for King George IV. Walk the white sands on Silica Beach before cooling off at the base of a waterfall at Crocodile Creek in one of our favourite water holes.

DAY 3 - RED CONE CREEK/RUBY FALLS AND RAFT POINT

On board “Homer” while you cruise through Red Cone Creek, swim in the water hole, exam the Ruby falls and feel the power as you bath beneath them. Quick cruise to Raft Point, the site of perhaps the best Aboriginal rock art on the coast. A short walk at this location reveals spectacular scenery & endless views across Doubtful Bay to Steep Island.

At the Raft Point gallery we will learn about the local Aboriginal beliefs & cultures, the lifestyles they once enjoyed & the Wandjina that shaped their land.

DAY 4 - MONTGOMERY REEF – SALE RIVER

Through Turtle Alley we will arrive at Montgomery Reef, at 400 square kilometers it is subject to unusual tidal movements, with the outgoing tide the reef is then exposed by no more than 4 metres deep revealing the wonders below at a closer glance. Next stop Sale River, here ‘Homer’ will take us further up stream to view the sandstone cliff’s as we make our way toward the rainforest the narrow gorges hide. Quick walk through the lush forest then it’s time to relax on board Odyssey as we stay overnight at Hall Point.

DAY 5 - CAMDEN HARBOUR

Today we travel south through Camden Sound, a world-renowned location for the Humpback Whale population that breeds and live here as well as the other aquatic mammals, hopefully you will sight a few. We’ll make a stop for a walk on Sheep Island here we’ll visit the lonely headstone and grave of Mary Jane Pascoe. We’ll take time to reflect and engage on the tragic events that took place in this region in the 1860’s as early settlers faced many hardships trying to make the Kimberley their home.

DAY 6 - PRINCE REGENT - KING CASCADE

Further into the Prince Regent you go, expect to get wet, first King Cascades; where you will marvel over the famous icons cascading water over the terraced rock that has formed over thousands of years; second if the tide allows the magnificent Cathedral Falls. Then it’s ashore for a short climb to view the ancient boriginal artwork know as Bradshaw Art, named after pastoralist Joseph Bradshaw who was the first European to discover it in 1891.

DAY 7 - PRINCE REGENT RIVER – CAMP CREEK

As we cruise into the St George Basin and up the Prince Regent River lookout for Mt. Trafalgar and Mt. Wellington as they stand tall and untouched by civilization. We will head ashore and by foot we will find the waters of Camp Creek, enjoy the treasures of this location as you plunge into the fresh water, if your more agile a 20 minute walk to upper reach and you’ll find two stunning waterfalls. Plenty to see and do, including an amazing view; huge pristine water pools. After spending some time at Camp Creek it’s back to Odyssey, a spot of fishing may be on the agenda, the keen can try their hand at catching the elusive Barramundi.

DAY 8 - CAREENING BAY AND PRINCE REGENT RIVER

Today we leave Prince Frederick Harbour and travel southward towards the famous boab “Mermaid Tree” on which the numbers “1846” were carved. It marks Parker King’s expedition in the same year and named after his boat, the “Mermaid”. We’ll go ashore and spend time being apart of the history before departing onwards to St George Basin.

DAY 9 - MITCHELL PLATEAU

This morning your transport will take you Broome Airport where you will begin your journey. First a scenic flight to the Mitchell Plateau Airstrip; a helicopter ride following over Mitchell Falls landing at Naturalist Island; our trusty tender vessel, “Homer”, will then shuttle you to the awaiting Odyssey. After a safety briefing, huge welcome, and light lunch it’s time to explore the riches of the Hunter River that presents perhaps the most spectacular river scenery in Western Australia, with grand red cliffs towering above mangrove fringed rivers. The excellent tour guides will show you some magnificent wildlife as you cruise along Roe River and Porosis Creek.
