MONTGOMERY REEF GUIDE

Discover Montgomery Reef, one of the Kimberley's most spectacular natural attractions. Learn what makes this tidal wonder unique, what wildlife to see and how to visit on a Kimberley cruise.

Few destinations leave a bigger impression on Kimberley cruise passengers than Montgomery Reef.

Located off the remote Kimberley coast of Western Australia, this outstanding destination is one of the largest inshore reef systems in the world and arguably one of Australia's most extraordinary natural phenomena.

Unlike a traditional coral reef, Montgomery Reef appears to rise from the ocean as powerful Kimberley tides recede. As millions of litres of water drain from the reef, hundreds of cascading waterfalls form across its surface, creating a spectacle found nowhere else on Earth.

For many travellers, visiting this area of outstanding marine beuaty becomes the defining moment of their Kimberley cruise.

WHAT IS MONTGOMERY REEF

An outline in brief

Montgomery Reef is a vast reef system covering more than 300 square kilometres in the southern Kimberley region.

The reef sits within a remote marine environment accessible primarily by expedition cruise vessels, small ships and specialist scenic flight operators.

What makes Montgomery Reef unique is not simply its size but the dramatic tidal movements that transform its appearance throughout the day.

A Living Tidal Landscape

The Kimberley experiences some of the largest tides in the world, often exceeding 10 metres.

As tides fall, water pours from the reef in every direction, creating hundreds of temporary waterfalls.

The result is an ever-changing landscape that appears to emerge from the sea itself.

One of Australia's Most Unique Natural Wonders

Many visitors arrive expecting a reef.

They leave having witnessed something closer to a living geological event.

The scale, movement and sheer spectacle of Montgomery Reef are difficult to fully appreciate until experienced firsthand.

WHY MONTGOMERY REEF IS SO FAMOUS

One of the biggest tidal movements in the world

CELEBRITY STATUS

Montgomery Reef is famous because it behaves unlike any other reef system in Australia.

As tidal waters recede, the reef appears to rise dramatically from the ocean.

This process creates:

  • Waterfalls cascading from the reef
  • Exposed coral and reef formations
  • Vast mudflats and channels
  • Excellent wildlife viewing opportunities
  • Ever-changing landscapes throughout the day

The Kimberley's Giant Tides

The region's powerful tides drive the entire Montgomery Reef experience.

Without these dramatic tidal movements, the reef would remain largely hidden beneath the water.

Waterfalls Flowing From the Ocean

One of the most remarkable sights is watching water cascade from the reef itself.

These temporary waterfalls can stretch for kilometres across the reef system.
