DAY 2: King George River and Falls (Oomari Falls)

Fed by the King George River flowing from the Gardner Plateau, the 80-metre-high King George Falls stand as the Kimberley’s most spectacular waterfalls and the tallest twin falls in Western Australia. To reach them, we journey through towering gorges, sculpted by a river system that carved its path through the Kimberley landscape over 400 million years ago.

At the start of the season, we cruise directly to the base of the powerful falls, feeling the mist rise from below. Later in the year, when water levels drop, we explore the striking sandstone cliffs up close, where honeycomb erosion patterns reveal the timeless artistry of nature.

DAY 3Vansittart Bay (Banjal)

Vansittart Bay is rich in cultural and historical significance, featuring the extraordinary Gwion Gwion (Bradshaw) Aboriginal rock art galleries, believed to be up to 20,000 years old. On Jar Island, named after the pottery shards left behind by Makassan fishermen who once harvested sea cucumbers (trepang), history comes vividly to life.

Close by, on the Anjo Peninsula, lies the remarkably well-preserved wreck of a US Air Force C-53 Skytrooper aircraft. The plane made an emergency landing on a salt pan in 1942 after the pilot lost his bearings en route from Perth to Broome, near what is now Truscott Airbase.

Mitchell Falls, Winyalkan, & Swift Bay

Mitchell Falls, cascading over the Mitchell Plateau in a series of tiered waterfalls and emerald-green rock pools, is the iconic highlight of Mitchell River National Park. A scenic helicopter flight (additional cost) offers breathtaking views of the multi-tiered falls, where shimmering pools spill over rugged escarpments and ancient rock art hides in caves behind veils of water.*

The park is a sanctuary for a wide variety of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and bird species, all drawn to its year-round water source. From sandstone terraces overlooking the pools, you can take in the serene beauty of this timeless landscape.

For those seeking an alternative, explore the weathered sandstone caves of Wollaston Bay or Wollaston Creek, a labyrinth of arches, tunnels, and columns that once served as an Aboriginal midden. While anchored at Winyalkan Bay, another option is to visit rock art galleries at Swift Bay, showcasing both Wandjina and Gwion Gwion art.

As evening falls, relax with a gourmet BBQ while watching the sun sink into the Indian Ocean—a perfect ending to a day of discovery.

Scenic helicopter flights to Mitchell Falls are not available on Coral Geographer’s March 19th, 2026 departure.

Prince Frederick Harbour and Bigge Island (Wuuyuru)

Prince Frederick Harbour is one of the Kimberley’s most spectacular locations at the southern end of York Sound. The harbour is dotted with islands lined with mangroves and monsoon rainforests, set against a backdrop of ochre-hued escarpment.

White-bellied sea eagles and other birds of prey are often seen here, and at low tide, expansive mudflats reveal large populations of mudskippers and mangrove crabs. We will take our Xplorer tender vessels on a cruise up Porosus Creek to view some striking rock formations.

Bigge Island’s Indigenous name is Wuuyuru, and the Indigenous Group of the area is the Wunambal people.

Prince Regent River

King Cascade is one of the Kimberley’s most photographed natural wonders—a striking terraced waterfall where water spills gracefully from a great height across a 50-metre-wide ledge of sandstone. The ochre and blackened rock is draped with mosses, ferns, and grasses, creating the appearance of a lush hanging garden.

To reach this spectacle, we journey in Xplorer tender vessels along the Prince Regent River, a geological marvel that runs perfectly straight along a fault line through steep-sided gorges.

Careening Bay (Wunbung-gu)

Lieutenant Phillip Parker King named Careening Bay after beaching his leaking vessel, HMC Mermaid, here to make repairs. Stranded for 17 days along this remote stretch of coastline, the ship’s carpenter carved HMC Mermaid 1820 into the trunk of a bottle-shaped boab tree near the shore. More than 200 years later, the famous Mermaid Boab Tree has split into two massive trunks and grown to an impressive 12 metres in girth. Today, it is listed on the National Register of Big Trees, with the carpenter’s inscription still clearly visible—standing nearly as tall as a person.

Montgomery Reef (Yowjab)

Montgomery Reef, named by Phillip Parker King, spans more than 300 square kilometres and is one of the Kimberley’s most remarkable natural wonders. Twice a day, as the mammoth 11-metre tides recede, the reef appears to rise dramatically from the Indian Ocean. Water cascades off its flat-topped surface, revealing a maze of rock pools and rivulets.

Exploring by Xplorer and Zodiac tenders, we get up close to this spectacle as our Expedition Team explains the reef’s formation and the diverse wildlife it supports. Opportunistic birds swoop in to feast on exposed marine life, while turtles, dolphins, dugongs, and even sawfish gather to feed in the shallows.

The retreating tide sets the ocean swirling with eddies and whirlpools under the pull of the moon’s gravity—only for the entire drama to reverse hours later as the reef once again disappears beneath the sea.

Montgomery-Reef-CORAL-EXPEDITIONS-KIMBERLEY-SOLO-DEALS

Doubtful Bay

Red Cone Creek winds its way downstream before meeting the small yet striking Ruby Falls, named by local mariner Capt. Chris Tucker after his daughter. The creek has carved its path through layered rock formations that resemble giant building blocks. A short natural rock climb leads to a secluded freshwater pool, offering both a sense of adventure and the refreshing reward of a swim. Depending on the season, the falls may tumble as a rushing torrent or trickle gently over the rocks.

In Doubtful Bay, other highlights we may explore include the dramatic Steep Island along with the beauty of Ruby Falls at Red Cone Creek.

Doubtful-Bay-CORAL-EXPEDITIONS-KIMBERLEY-SOLO-DEALS

Horizontal Falls (Garaanngaddim) and Buccaneer Archipelago

The Horizontal Falls are one of the Kimberley’s most iconic natural wonders, formed by the region’s immense 11-metre tides. Described by Sir David Attenborough as “one of the greatest natural wonders of the world,” this breathtaking phenomenon occurs as seawater surges through a narrow gap in the McLarty Ranges, creating the appearance of a waterfall turned on its side. Experiencing the rapids up close aboard our Zodiac tenders is a thrilling highlight of any Kimberley expedition.

Located in Talbot Bay at the heart of the Buccaneer Archipelago, the falls are surrounded by a landscape of staggering geological history, with islands dating back more than two billion years. At Cyclone Creek, dramatic rock formations reveal the forces that shaped this ancient land, while cruising past the Iron Islands and Koolan Island adds further depth to the journey. The day ends perfectly with sunset drinks at Nares Point.

Please note: 2026 will be the final year we operate tender cruises through the First Gap. From 2027 onwards, you’ll still enjoy close-up Zodiac and tender excursions right to the Gap, where you can witness the full force of the tides at peak flow.

The Lacepede Islands

The Lacepede Islands, a protected Class-A nature reserve, are an important seabird nesting ground, most notably for brown boobies and roseate terns. They are also home to Australian pelicans, frigatebirds, egrets, and gulls, while their sandy shores provide a vital breeding habitat for green turtles.

When weather and tides permit, we venture out by Xplorer and Zodiac tenders to explore the islands’ sheltered lagoons.

As our unforgettable Kimberley journey comes to an end, we gather on our final evening for the Captain’s farewell drinks, celebrating new friendships and shared memories of adventure.
