The Rowley Shoals is famed for diving and fishing cruises because of the remarkable quality of the water and the the vast range of fish living there.
Our team at Kimberley Boat Cruises has been taking customers out to the Rowley Shoals for nearly 12 years. We have participated in the recording of multiple TV shows and we are immensely proud that we were instrumental in making the Rowley Shoals a “catch-and-release” fishing zone.
The Rowley Shoals are located in the Indian Ocean, 196 nautical miles due west of Broome. They comprise of three pear-shaped coral atolls that sit atop an enormous continental shelf. They were first discovered on 13 March 1817 by Lt. Philip Parker King.
These three coral atolls of the Rowley Shoals are called Imperieuse Reef, Clerke Reef and Mermaid. Each one of these atolls climb vertically 400-metres from the ocean floor.
Surrounding this cluster of ‘islands’ is an underwater kingdom teeming with 688 species of fish and 288 types of coral, many of which cannot be found anywhere else in the world. Fishing experts call it, “the best game fishing destination in Australia, bar none.” Others simply refer to it as, “a diving heaven.” Underwater visibility can be an unprecedented 60-metres, while the tidal ranges are five-metres.
The Rowley Shoals is a marine park of unequalled beauty and one of the last great marine wildernesses left on Earth. It’s no wonder the famed French diver, Jacques Cousteau, ranked the Rowley Shoals in his top 10 diving locations of all time. Few dispute his claim.
When it comes to fishing charters, there is no question in our minds that the Rowley Shoals offers the best fishing in the country and not just Western Australia. Typically, fishing trips go there for a short window between August and mid-November of each year.
